#31DH: October 4th, 2015 – Funny Games (1997)

Standard

Synopsis: Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic “games” with one another for their own amusement.

Impressions:  The first time i saw a trailer for this movie was the american version.  Since the original german version was on netflix, i decided to watch this because almost all the time, the original is better than the remake.  After watching this i would not consider this “horror.” The reason why i watched it was because the trailers i’ve seen made it out as a horror film.  The film does have some intense, grotesque moments similar to horror films, but it mostly has more of a social message than trying to be bloody.  Overall i enjoyed parts of the film, while other just dragged out.

Social Message:  The message really looks at violence as a game, something that the mass media likes to portray.  This is evident in the remote scene where an outcome happened that the killers did not want, so they rewind back to that fatal moment and change the outcome so they can continue to pour out punishment to the couple.
