#31DH: October 4th, 2015 – Funny Games (1997)

Standard

Synopsis: Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic “games” with one another for their own amusement.

Impressions:  The first time i saw a trailer for this movie was the american version.  Since the original german version was on netflix, i decided to watch this because almost all the time, the original is better than the remake.  After watching this i would not consider this “horror.” The reason why i watched it was because the trailers i’ve seen made it out as a horror film.  The film does have some intense, grotesque moments similar to horror films, but it mostly has more of a social message than trying to be bloody.  Overall i enjoyed parts of the film, while other just dragged out.

Social Message:  The message really looks at violence as a game, something that the mass media likes to portray.  This is evident in the remote scene where an outcome happened that the killers did not want, so they rewind back to that fatal moment and change the outcome so they can continue to pour out punishment to the couple.

#31DH: October 3rd, 2015 – The Corpse Bride

Standard

Synopsis: When a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her.

Impressions:  Being a Tim Burton fan, I liked this movie and the animation.  It was entertaining, had fun songs, and the story was interesting.  I also liked the difference in color where the living was in black and white, but the dead were in color.

Social Message: It seemed to me that true love can bring color into this world.  It wasn’t until the end where we really see color come into the world of the living, especially since those who lived in the world of the living were very strict to rules and marrying for social status instead of love.

#31DH: October 2nd, 2015 – V/H/S: Viral

Standard

Synopsis: A Los Angeles police chase sends a fame-obsessed man on a wild ride to save his girlfriend from a cybernetic terror.

Impressions:  I have seen the other VHS films and this one was by far the worst of them all.  For those who have not seen them, there is a main story that connects three other sub stories to it.  THe problem is the sub films usually does nothing to help move the story along except what is the next sud story.  There is usually one really creative sub story that has kept me giving the movie and the other films a chance.  This one however was so weak, i wish i would get my 86 minutes back.

Social Message:  I almost feel like in the three VHS films, they try so hard on the message that the execution is poor.  In short, there is always a price to pay when seeking fame.

#31DH: October 1st, 2015 – Re-Animator

Standard

Synopsis: A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus.

Impressions:  This film based off a H.P. Lovecraft story has all the eighties vibe with 70s exploitation elements.  Very similar themes in other classic horror where there is a scientist who wants to find the secret of re-animating the dead.  But unlike frankenstein, where the Victor sews pieces of body parts together and shocks it with lightning, people come back to life with some green, mountain dew looking serum. As the experiments continue to get “better,” a more vile issue comes which changes everything.

I thought the movie was entertaining, once i got pass the bad acting and 80s cheese.  There were times i was cringing with disgust, and other times i was laughing at how dated this film is.

Social Message:  I don’t think the writers were trying to add some kind of social commentary with this one, However, I did find something fascinating with the theme of bringing people back to life.

SPOILERS AHEAD

With Frankenstein, there is a theme about Man trying to play God, and that when Man plays God bad things happen.  We see similar themes in Re-Animator.  However, it takes it further under the guise of science and the rapid changes in the medical field.  Dan, is sucked into Dr. West’s experiments and sees the evil of the re-animated.  However, seeing how each experiment gets better than the last, he then becomes a believer.  When the climax of the story hits, and West dies, giving Dan his notes, Dan has seen the ugliness of this serum.  You almost suspect that Dan is going to destroy the notes and serum, but then his girlfriend dies, and at the closing scene he uses the Mt. Dew Serum to try to revive her.

Ultimately, We can see the rapid changes in the medical industry to help improve our lives, but what is the cost with new medicines with harsh side effect? The price of medicine you need that cost someone their entire retirement fund, is it worth it?  So what i learned from this is that we must always be educated with new advancements in medicine and know how it will effect us long term.

Miley Cyrus helps Homeless LBGT teens; another reason why the church has failed

Standard

I woke up this morning to clean the house a bit before i have my epic nerd game night filled with marvel legendary and other fun games.  But like most people, i decided to check facebook to see what was going on with my family, friends, church members, etc.  I usually look at the trending sidebar and looked at the Captain American Civil War Movie, The new National Lampoon’s Vacation, and the day MJ made me cry with The Shot.

As I was looking at what is trending, I saw that Miley Cyrus had started a Foundation to help homeless LBGT teens.  As i was reading the article, and I thought to myself, “How come the Christian Community is not doing this (There may be some christian organizations out there, but i don’t know of any)?”

Looking back at church history, everyone would go to the church to get help and to find rest.  Heck, if you wanted to start a business you would have to go through the church to do so.  Now I’m not saying we should go back to a church being a bank, but whatever people needed, they would go to the church for assistance, help, guidance, etc.  Today, it seems like the church has loss it’s reputation to being a place of healing, rest, and/or protection.

Regardless of what your view is on the LBGT community, the church has a responsibility to help those who are in need.  When we stop helping, we stop being the image of Christ, thus we stop being the church.

Jesus had strict teaching on helping others.

He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”(Mat 25:33-1 NIV)

So the question is, are you a sheep or a goat?
